Confronting Truths of Human Trafficking In Plain Sight
On a Sunday evening in Nashville, Tennessee, a gathering of over 100 individuals at the "In Plain Sight" event organized by the New Hope Community Church, confronted the harsh reality of human trafficking. This event served as a beacon of knowledge and awareness in the ongoing battle against human trafficking, and Operation Rose is deeply honored to have been a part of this pivotal occasion.
Among these distinguished panelists was our very own Director of Training and Outreach, Investigator & Consultant, Jason Mayo, who brought his wealth of expertise and experience in combating human trafficking to illuminate the discussion.
As we reflect on this eye-opening panel event, it compels us even more to amplify our voices and raise awareness, to inspire you and the entire community to take action alongside us.
Here are our top 3 takeaways that you need to know:
SHIFT . INFORM . CHANGE
1. SHIFT
Debunking Myths - A Crucial SHIFT in Perspective
One of the panel's pivotal moments was the collective effort to debunk the myths surrounding human trafficking. Many individuals still believe that their children are only at risk of being snatched at a bus stop and trafficked. The panel's experts, drawing from their wealth of knowledge, clarified that the landscape of human trafficking has evolved. While such cases still occur, the issue is far more insidious and complex. This takeaway serves as a crucial shift in perspective, encouraging us to be aware of the changing face of this crime.
2. INFORM
The App Challenge: Be INFORMED in the Digital Realm
During the event, a significant number of inquiries revolved around the use of apps and their potential dangers for young children. Snapchat emerged as one of the most vulnerable apps for the youth, underlining the importance of digital vigilance. This key insight reminds us that as parents and caregivers, it's vital to stay informed about the digital landscape our children navigate. The responsibility to protect them in the digital realm falls on our shoulders.
3. CHANGE
Alertness and Engagement: The Path to CHANGE
Perhaps one of the most striking aspects of the panel event was the engagement and alertness of the attendees. The audience members actively participated in discussions and sought answers to pressing questions. This collective spirit of vigilance and engagement mirrors the principle of Operation Rose, which is dedicated to empowering grassroots efforts. It's a reminder that, as a community, we have the power to make a difference when we come together, informed and united.
As we look ahead, we are reminded that the battle against human trafficking calls for each of us to contribute. This is why we extend a heartfelt invitation to you to join us at the Operation Rose's 2nd Annual Benefit Dinner, happening on September 30, 2023.
